Introducing Non-Opioid Pain Management

Introducing Non-Opioid Pain Management

Now, there are ways to minimize or even eliminate pain with fewer opioids.

If you are concerned about the effects of opioids for pain management after surgery for you or your children, you may consider a new option that reduces and even eliminates pain with less addictive side-effects.

We at Carolinas Center For Oral & Facial Surgery care about our patients’ experience following wisdom teeth removal or any oral surgery. Our goal is to help reduce or avoid opioids for post-operative pain whenever possible. While most assume that pain after surgery is normal, we know that it doesn’t have to be.

Dr. Dale J. Misiek, DMD

The Doctors of Carolinas Center for Oral & Facial Surgery are pleased to offer non-narcotic EXPAREL® (bupivacaine liposome injectable suspension). EXPAREL® is a non-opioid anesthetic that can keep the surgical site numb for 24-hours to up to 3 days.

EXPAREL is given as an injection placed into the area near the surgical incision. Patients generally receive this injection in a surgical or hospital setting. Dosage is dependent on size of surgical site, volume required to cover area, and individual patient factors that may impact the safety of an amide local anethetic.

Dr. Dale Misiek has been directly involved in our efforts to utilize non-steroid pain control. Speaking with national non-profit organization, Shatterproof (www.shatterproof.org@ShatterproofHQ), Dr. Misiek indicated, “One of the biggest misconceptions oral surgery patients have is that effective pain management can only come in the form of an opioid – it is my responsibility to inform my patients that non-opioid options are available. As with any surgery, some level of pain is expected. The long-acting numbing medication that we offer provides pain relief for a few days, often when pain is at it’s peak. Through the use of this method, oral surgery patients find that their pain is effectively managed without the dangerous side effects of being exposed to opioids.”
