Charlotte, N.C., – Carolinas Center for Oral & Facial Surgery has completed their acquisition of a Gastonia based oral surgery practice and welcomes Dr. John Robinson II, DMD to the oral surgery practice. Our Gastonia oral surgery office provides an additional location to refer patients in the western part of the NC Piedmont & Metrolina regions.

Heading the team at our Gastonia oral surgery office is Dr. John W. Robinson, III, DMD. With more than 20 years leading Western North Carolina in implant reconstruction, Dr. Robinson brings his talent and knowledge to CCOFS and the Gastonia area.

Interior of our Gastonia oral surgery office at 1041 X Ray Drive“Gastonia is an up-and-coming area close to our Charlotte offices” says Danny Ketola, Business Manager for CCOFS’ current offices. “The area doesn’t have many oral surgeons, and we have a lot of patients that come into Charlotte from the surrounding communities to access the level of care we are able to offer. Now they are able to get that same level of care a lot closer to home.”

About Dr. John Robinson

John Robinson III, DMD, will lead the Gastonia office. A native of Charleston, SC, Dr. Robinson was a member of the All Academic Tennis Team while attending Francis Marion University where he studied Biology. Dr. Robinson began his career in healthcare as a Pharmacist upon completion of a Bachelor Degree in Pharmacy from The Medical University of South Carolina.

Dr. Robinson comes from a family of dental professionals which helped influence him to obtain his Doctor of Dental Medicine from MUSC. Following dental school, he relocated to New England while attending his Residency in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery at The University of Connecticut Health Center. Dr. Robinson holds Board Certifications in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Dental Anesthesiology. After relocating to North Carolina, he has worked alongside outstanding colleagues throughout the state and is Past President of the NC Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons.

“The Gastonia community is such a great place to live & work” says Dr. Robinson. “I’m able to offer the kind of care normally reserved for larger hospitals right here in Gastonia. Our patients love the increased level of comfort and technologies this oral surgery practice brings.”

The Gastonia oral surgery office will receive state-of-art technology from CCOFS and become part of the only AAAHC accredited oral surgery practice in the state. The practice pioneered The Charlotte Method, a virtual surgical planning system used in certain jaw surgeries. The Method begins with a CT scan of the patient, creating a digital record of the facial skeleton. This record provides CCOFS’ doctors with an animated guide of how to complete the surgery before stepping into the operating room. This process is both cost and time savings and generally less invasive surgery for the patient (including less nerve damage), as well as, allowing the patient to view how they will appear afterwards.

About Carolinas Center For Oral & Facial Surgery

CCOFS has been an innovator in oral and maxillofacial surgery since it’s beginnings. In 1987, the practice opened as University Oral Surgery with a staff of two people. More staff members were added throughout the early 1990s. By 1998, there were three offices in Charlotte and Concord with a fourth opening in 2005 in Denver, NC. The Blakeney/Ballantyne office opened in 2013.

Today, CCOFS is the largest oral and maxillofacial-focused practice in the Carolinas and one of the largest in the country. In 2016, the practice completed more than 300 jaw surgeries, including correcting overbites, underbites and sleep apnea corrections. CCOFS surgery team includes twelve (12) full and part-time oral and maxillofacial surgeons. Each of these surgeons is board-certified by the American Board of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery and are fellows of the American Association of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons.

CCOFS also has the only accredited private practice cleft palate team in contrast to state-operated or university hospitals such as: Wake Forest University; Duke University; University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill; Medical University of South Carolina; and University of South Carolina. CCOFS is also one of the few practices in the Carolinas offering total joint replacement surgeries. As for educational training, CCOFS started a private fellowship program in 2007 that focuses on Orthognathic, TMJ and reconstruction surgeries.

“Most people go where their dentist tells them to go and they don’t look into any other options,” said Danny Ketola. “Now, they can. We want them to know we are an option for any oral surgery procedure, including wisdom teeth removal.”
